How to Write Short Films That WORK

Some common barriers:

• Going too big

• Not Knowing where you’re headed

How to overcome them!

• Create your outline first, before the script

• do not think from your head, when you are writing write it like a proper script, you are the audience

• learn story structure before you start writing

• create a set of rules to follow when you first begin, then break those barriers later

  ex. I need to write a horror film about a lightbulb in under ten minutes. 1. horror film. 2. lightbulb. 3. ten minutes.

• this turns the writing process into a game.

• know your resources as you begin your outline and writing process

• formatting- story circle and set up for your script

• annotate your script adding in whatever props, actors, costumes, locations, time, crew, etc. to the script.

• editing is SE, color grading, music, sound, etc. etc.

• use music/ other film to inspire you/ find inspo somewhere

• format matters very little but it’s helpful to look at storyboards

• keep track of your shots with your storyboard

• storyboard is a shot for shot inspo page

• baking paper over too bright lights makes the scene more dark and cinematic

• when you don’t want a bunch of actors just use voice overs to represent characters. this can be through phone calls, voice mail, letters etc.
