Gas Transport and the Role of Hemoglobin

Introduction

  • Blood travels from the lungs via the pulmonary veins to the heart, then from the heart via systemic arteries to body tissues, and finally from body tissues via systemic veins back to the pulmonary arteries.

Gas Exchange

  • The main focus is how gases are exchanged in the blood.
  • Gas exchange occurs in two primary locations:
    • Lungs: Carbon dioxide (CO<em>2CO<em>2) in the blood is exchanged for oxygen (O</em>2O</em>2).
    • Body Tissues: Oxygen (O<em>2O<em>2) in the blood is exchanged for carbon dioxide (CO</em>2CO</em>2).

Gas Exchange in the Lungs

  • In the lungs, carbon dioxide (CO<em>2CO<em>2) is removed from the blood and replaced with oxygen (O</em>2O</em>2) during inhalation and exhalation.
