Italian Noun Gender and Pluralization Rules
Standard Singular-to-Plural Endings:
Masculine Nouns in -o: Change to -i in the plural.
Example: Un gatto due gatti
Example: Libro libri
Example: Tavolo tavoli
Feminine Nouns in -a: Change to -e in the plural.
Example: Una gatta due gatte
Nouns in -e (Masculine or Feminine): Change to -i in the plural.
Example (Masculine): Esame due esami
Example (Feminine): Una notte due notti
Nouns Ending in -io:
Nouns ending in an unaccented -io drop the -o to end in a single -i in the plural.
Example: Ufficio uffici
Example: Orologio orologi
Nouns Ending in -ione:
All nouns ending in -ione are feminine (nomi in -ione sono femminili).
The plural form changes -ione to -ioni.
Example: Una lezione due lezioni
Feminine Nouns Ending in -e:
Follow standard -e to -i pluralization.
Example: Una notte due notti
Abbreviated / Truncated Nouns (Invariable):
Shortened nouns retain their singular form in the plural (non hanno il plurale).
Example: Una foto (short for fotografia) Due foto
Example: Una bici (short for bicicletta) Due bici
Example: Una moto (short for motocicletta) Due moto
Example: Un cinema (short for cinematografo) Due cinema
Accented Nouns (Invariable):
Nouns ending with a written accent (nomi con accento) do not change in the plural.
Example: Un caffé Due (2) caffé
Example: Un'università Due università
Nouns of Greek Origin Ending in -ema:
Nouns originating from Greek that end in -ema are masculine (nomi in -ema, Greek language, sono maschili).
Pluralize by changing -ema to -emi.
Example: Problema due problemi
Example: Poema poemi
Example: Sistema due sistemi
Orthographic & Phonetic Adjustments in Plurals:
Preserving Hard Sounds with 'H':
Feminine nouns ending in -ca: Amica amiche (inserts 'h' to maintain the hard 'c' sound).
Masculine nouns ending in -go: Albergo alberghi (inserts 'h' to maintain the hard 'g' sound).
Phonetic Shift Exceptions:
Masculine nouns ending in -co: Amico amici (shifts from a hard sound in singular to a soft 'ci' sound in plural).
