Alimentary Canal Components and Functions

  • The Alimentary Canal pathway consists of: Pharynx \rightarrow oesophagus \rightarrow stomach \rightarrow small intestine \rightarrow Large intestine + rectum \rightarrow anus.
  • Primary organs include: Tongue (T), Oesophagus (O), Spleen (SP), Liver (L), Gall bladder (G), Stomach (S), Duodenum (D), Jejunum (J), Caecum (C), Spiral colon (SC), Transverse colon (TC), Small/descending colon (CT), Rectum (R), Mesentery (M), and Anus (A).
  • Digestive functions are categorized into:
    1. Ingestion
    2. Secretion
    3. Motility: Migrating Motor Complex, Peristalsis, Segmental contractions.
    4. Digestion: Mechanical and Chemical.
    5. Absorption
    6. Excretion

Structural Layers of the Digestive Tract

  • The tubular digestive tract follows a typical four-layer structure (luminal to outer surface):
  • Mucosa: Consists of the Epithelium (on basement membrane), Lamina propia (loose irregular connective tissue supporting nutrients and immune defense), and Muscularis mucosa (smooth muscle for movement).
  • Submucosa: Contains the Meissenaus plexus (Submucosal) and Meissenors peluxus, which regulate blood flow and gland secretion.
  • Muscularis externa: Composed of an Inner circular layer (ICL) to narrow the lumen and an Outer longitudinal layer (OLL) to shorten the tube. It contains the Aurebachs plexus (myenteric plexus).
  • Serosa/Adventitia: Serosa is loose irregular connective tissue with mesothelium (Visceral peritoneum or Parietal peritoneum). Adventitia is connective tissue without mesothelium.

Plexus Regulation and Musculature

  • Meissenors peluxus: Stimulates gland secretion to protect against stomach acid and controls movement of the muscularis mucosae to enhance nutrient mixing.
  • Myenteric plexus: Co-ordinates motility using excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters; functions independently of the Central Nervous System.
  • Stomach Muscle Layers: Features three layers: Inner oblique, middle circular, and outer longitudinal.
  • Tissue specifics: Includes structures such as the crypt of the fland of Lieberkind, Brunners glands, and Peyer's patch.

Salivary Glands and Saliva Functions

  • Major extrinsic glands: Parotid (serous), Mandibular (seromucous), and Sublingual (mucous).
  • Minor intrinsic glands: Labial, Buccal, Palatine, and Lingual.
  • Species variations: Dogs have the zygomatic gland (mucous); Cats have the molar gland (mucous).
  • Saliva composition: Water, Mucous, Electrolytes, Enzymes (Amylase, Lipase), and Antimicrobials (Secretory IgA, lysozyme, lactoferrin).
  • Primary functions: Lubrication, Bolus formation, Tissue protection, Antibacterial action, Digestion via amylase, Acid buffering (bicarb), and Thermoregulation.

Oral Anatomy and Dental Structure

  • Lips: Features an outer cutaneous surface (KSSE in ruminants and horses; NKSSE in pigs and carnivores) and an inner oral mucosa (NKSSE).
  • Tongue: Contains Vallate and Fungiform papillae. The dorsal surface is KSSE, while the ventral surface is NKSSE.
  • Tonsils: Specialized lymphoid organs including Palatine tonsils, Lingual tonsil, and Pharyngeal tonsil.
  • Tooth types: Brachydont and Hypsodont.
  • Tooth anatomy: Hard tissues include Enamel (no repair post-eruption), Dentin (forms most of the tooth), and Cement. The Pulp cavity contains sensitive vascular tissue. The Periodontal Ligament (PDL) acts as an anchor and shock absorber.
