An operating system is an integrated system of programs that manages the operations of the CPU controls the input /output and storage resources and activities of the computer system and provides various support services as the computer executes the application program of users.

Operating System Functions An operating system performs five basic functions.

User Interface: For system and network communication with users.

Resource Management: For managing the hardware resources and input peripherals of computer system.

File Management: For managing files of data and programs.

Task Management: For managing the task a computer must accomplish .we have 2 types of tasks

1) Single task

2) Multiple tasks, Again this multiple task divided into 2 as preemptive and coordinative. Utilities and other functions: that provides miscellaneous support and service.
