Constantine’s forces were exhausted, and he anticipated defeat, capture, and execution.

According to historical accounts and legends, Constantine looked toward the sun and saw the cross of Christ emblazoned in the sky. Surrounding this image was the script "in this sign you shall conquer" (In hoc signo vinces). Constantine made a solemn vow that if he were granted victory, he would accept Christianity as his religion and lead Rome toward a Christian future. Engineering and Architectural Innovation

Roman success was built upon masterful engineering. Their roads were designed with crowned surfaces—meaning the center was higher than the sides—to facilitate water drainage and prevent crumbling. These roads included sophisticated underbeds and gutters. Beyond commerce, roads served as perimeter markers for the empire. Walking a road in Cyrenica (modern-day Libya), a traveler knew that civilization lay to the left and "savagery" or "barbarians" lay to the right. Architectural advancements included:
