Nomenclature (naming)

  • Ionic Compounds

    • Binary ionic compounds with 2 types of atoms and metal with only 1 type of charge: Name of Metal / Name of ion +ide

      • ex) KCl → potassium chloride

    • Binary ionic compounds with 2 types of atoms and metal that forms multiple types of charge: Name of Metal / (charge) / name of ion + ide

      • ex) CrBr3 → chromium (III) bromide

    • Ionic Compounds with polyatomic ions but with the name of polyatomic ion

      • ex) NaNO2 → sodium nitrite

  • Molecular Compounds

    • first element named fully

    • second named as if it’s an anion

    • Prefixes are used to specify the # of atoms (except if there’s only one of the first element)

  • Acids

    • When not dissolved in water: follow molecular compound naming

    • When dissolved in water:

      • Denoted with (aq) in the subscript = aqueous

      • hydro/base name of nonmetal + ic/ acid

        • ex) HCl(aq) → hydrochloric acid

  • Oxyacids

    • ends with -ate: Base name of oxyanion + ic/acid

      • ex) HNO3 - → nitric acid

    • ends with -ite: Base name of oxyanion + ic/acid

      • ex) HNO2 - → nitrous acid
