Introduction to A2 Key Vocabulary List
The A2 Key Vocabulary List serves as a guide for teachers in preparing students for A2 Key and Key for Schools exams.
Developed in consultation with external experts to assist item writers for the A2 Key examination.
Based on vocabulary from the Council of Europe’s Waystage (1990) specification and high-frequency corpus evidence.
Background of the List
The list includes vocabulary appropriate for the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
It comprises both receptive vocabulary (understood but not focused on) and productive vocabulary (needed to answer questions).
Does not encompass all words appearing on A2 Key and A2 Key for Schools papers; students should study beyond the list.
Updates to the List
The vocabulary of English continuously evolves, and the list is routinely updated.
Updates are based on the Cambridge Learner Corpus and English Vocabulary Profile, ensuring relevance.
The Cambridge Learner Corpus includes over 44 million words collected from language use by learners worldwide.
English Vocabulary Profile identifies the most common vocabulary necessary for learners in British and American English.
Each word's meaning is level-assigned from A1 to B2 on the CEFR.
Organisation of the Vocabulary List
Word Sets: Categories of common words learners are expected to know, e.g., days of the week, which are detailed in Appendix 1.
