- an ideology of expansion justified by the need for material, taking other people’s resources and lives
- at the end of the 19th century, there was a revived interest in imperial control, especially in Africa and Asia
- those foreign colonies served as a place where Europeans could trade palm oil, diamonds, cocoa, etc., and benefit greatly from it
- businessmen benefited from this market, as well as working people and shippers
- having a large empire causes pride in a country
- led to the Berlin Conference
- Europeans are the superior race, and they need to give their version of civilization to Asia and Africa
- there was no consideration for the preexisting culture and people in the places where Europe conquered
