PROEM - homer calls on the muse to sing of the anger of achilles. chryses comes to agamemnon to ask for his daughter chryseis back, offering a ransom. agamemnon angrily refuses chryses, who prays to apollo for help. apollo sends a plague on the greeks for refusing to honour his priest chryses and return his daughter chryseis for a ransom. achilles calls an assembly of the greeks. calchas, after obtaining the protection of achilles, tells the greeks why apollo is angry. achilles and agamemnon argue about whether another greek should give up their enslaved woman to compensate agamemnon.
