Matter

Matter

Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

It can exist in various states, including solid, liquid, and gas.

  • Examples: Wood, water, air

  • Each exhibits different properties and behavior.

Chemistry is the study of properties of matter how matter changes.

Properties of Matter

Specific properties

  • Color

  • Odor

  • Size

  • Shape

General properties

  • Mass

  • Weight

  • Volume

  • Density

Mass

  • The amount of matter an object has.

  • Does not change UNLESS matter is added or subtracted

Weight

  • Measure of the force of attraction between two objects

  • Due to gravity

  • Not constant and changes often due to factors including dieting and location.

    • Example: What you weight on Earth would not be the same as your weight on the moon due to less gravity

  • Is it the same as mass?

    • No

Gravity

  • The force of attraction between objects

  • All objects have gravity

  • The bigger the object the greater the gravitational pull

  • Characteristics of matter

  • Tell the difference between two separate pieces of matter

  • Physical and chemical changes
