Rail Fence Cipher Notes
Rail Fence Cipher
Overview
The Rail Fence cipher, also known as the "ZigZag" cipher, is a method of encrypting text by transposing the order of the letters in a message. The cipher works by writing the message using alternate lines (rails) across a page, and then reading each line to produce the ciphertext. It's a type of transposition cipher and can encrypt any character including spaces, but its security increases when all characters are of equal capitalization.
Encryption
- Key: The number of rows (rails) to use is given as the key.
- Offset: The starting position for the first plaintext character, typically 0.
- Spaces: The number of boxes (spaces) needed depends on the length of the message.
Example: Key = 2
Plaintext: THISISASECRETMESSAGE (20 characters)
Encryption:
T I I A E R T E S G H S S S C E M S A ECiphertext: TIIAERTESGHSSSCEMSAE
Example: Key = 3
Plaintext: THISISASECRETMESSAGE (20 characters)
Encryption:
T I E T S H S S S C E M S A E I A R E GCiphertext: TIETSHSSSCEMSAEIAREG
Decryption
Decryption involves reversing the encryption process.
Example: Key = 2
Ciphertext: TIIAERTESGHSSSCEMSAE
Decryption:
T I I A E R T E S G H S S S C E M S A EPlaintext: THISISASECRETMESSAGE
Example: Key = 3
Ciphertext: TIETSHSSSCEMSAEIAREG
Decryption:
T I E T S H S S S C E M S A E I A R E GPlaintext: THISISASECRETMESSAGE
Activities
- Encoding/Decoding Challenge: Write a message, choose a key, and post it in a discussion forum (e.g., on Canvas) for a classmate to decode using the Rail Fence Cipher.
- Key Questions Document: Complete all questions in the "Rail Fence Key Questions" document.
Educational Objectives
- Grades 1-3: Describe how to complete a Rail Fence Cipher.
- Grades 4-6: Use Rail Fence Cipher to encrypt and decrypt information.
- Grades 7-9: Differentiate between the Caesar, Pig Pen, Vigenere, and Rail Fence Ciphers.
