A Level Business Specification Overview

  • Accreditation: WJEC Eduqas GCE A Level, accredited by Ofqual, available since summer 2017.
  • Assessment Structure: Three main components, each 33⅓% of qualification, assessed through written examinations:
    • Component 1: Business Opportunities and Functions (2h 15m)
    • Component 2: Business Analysis and Strategy (2h 15m)
    • Component 3: Business in a Changing World (2h 15m)

Aims and Objectives

  • Develop enthusiasm for studying business.
  • Foster holistic understanding of business in various contexts.
  • Encourage critical analysis of organizations' societal roles.
  • Equip learners with business skills, including decision-making and numerical analysis.

Subject Content

Component 1: Business Opportunities and Functions

  • Focus on start-ups and SMEs, understanding market dynamics, business functions, and core concepts like finance, marketing, and human resources.

Component 2: Business Analysis and Strategy

  • Emphasizes analytical techniques for strategy formation, including data analysis, financial performance assessment, and decision-making models.

Component 3: Business in a Changing World

  • Covers how external factors like PEST (Political, Economic, Social, Technological) and globalization impact business strategies.

Key Skills Developed

  • Quantitative skills: calculations related to finance and economics.
  • Analytical skills: evaluating business opportunities and challenges.
  • Ethical considerations: understanding responsibilities of businesses to society.

Assessment Objectives

  • AO1: Knowledge and understanding of business terms and concepts (24-26%).
  • AO2: Application of knowledge in various contexts (24-26%).
  • AO3: Analysis of business impacts from internal/external influences (24-26%).
  • AO4: Evaluation of qualitative and quantitative data for informed decision-making (24-26%).

Practical Requirements

  • No prior learning requirements, though basic skills in numeracy and literacy are advantageous.
  • Emphasis on continuous assessment with the possibility of resits in subsequent years.
