SECTION A — TYPES OF INFORMATION

[12 marks]

For each statement, identify the most appropriate type of information.

Use the terminology you've been learning in class, such as fact, opinion, belief, prediction, generalisation, value judgement, claim, evidence, etc.

1.

“In 2025, more than half of the world's population lived in urban areas.”

Type: ___Fact_______

2.

“Traditional festivals are far more meaningful than modern celebrations.”

Type: _____Opinion____

3.

“Many teenagers today are becoming disconnected from their cultural traditions because of social media.”

Type: _____Value Judgement_____

4.

“I believe that governments have a responsibility to protect endangered cultural traditions.”

Type: ______Beleif____

5.

“If current trends continue, some traditional languages may disappear within the next century.”

Type: ______Prediction____

6.

A survey of 4,000 young people in five countries found that 72% use social media to learn about cultures different from their own.

Type: _______Evidence___

7.

“Young people are lazy and no longer care about their communities.”

Type: _____Generalisation_____

8.

“It is unacceptable for a government to allow a historic neighbourhood to be demolished for commercial development.”

Type: ______Opinion____

9.

“Social media has changed the way communities communicate.”

Type: __________Claim

BUT: Explain why this could be considered a claim rather than simply a fact.

[2 marks]

This is a claim because the speaker is presenting a statement which is open to interpretation and needs to have justifications and evidence, rather than being a simply asserted subjective truth.

10. TRICKY 👀

Read this:

“Everyone in our generation prefers digital communication to face-to-face communication.”

Identify TWO problems/types of information present in this statement and explain each.

[2 marks]

The statement uses generalization, meaning it makes an extremely broad claim on a certain part of society with only having limited evidence to support it. This lack of nuance displays a limited lens on how the speaker views this generation and disregards each and every individuals preference and diversity.

SECTION B — GLOBAL QUESTIONS

[6 marks]

A strong Global Question should be global in scope, focus on an issue, and allow investigation rather than simply asking about one person's situation.

11.

Which is the strongest Global Question?

A. Why does my school celebrate Diwali?

B. How has migration affected the cultural identity of communities around the world?

C. Why does my friend prefer Western music?

D. Should my school have a cultural festival?

B is the strongest Global question.

[1 mark]

Explain TWO reasons why your chosen question is stronger than the others.

[2 marks]

B is a stronger question as compared to others as it focuses not on a singular country, community, or area, but ensures that this question can be applied specifically for communities all over the world, and perceiving the impact of migration on cultural identity on a global scale. Additionally, the question is specific to an issue (migration) and focuses that singular issue on one’s cultural identity.

12.

Improve this question so that it becomes a stronger Global Question:

“How does social media affect culture?”

[1 mark]

How has the use of social media by people around the work affected cultural norms and values of diverse society’s?

13.

Explain one reason why this is a weak Global Question:

“Why do teenagers in my class use TikTok?”

[1 mark]

This is a weak Global question as it focuses only on the enagers in a class rather than exploring how the issue may impact today’s youth on a global scale.

14.

Which type of inquiry question is this?

“Can communities preserve their cultural identity while becoming increasingly globalised?”

[1 mark]

This is a Debatable question.

SECTION C — ISSUE ANALYSIS

[7 marks]

Read the scenario.

Over the past 30 years, a rapidly growing city has experienced major population growth. New apartment buildings and shopping centres have replaced some older neighbourhoods. Young people have moved into the city for education and employment, while some older residents have moved away. The city has become more culturally diverse, but some residents are concerned that traditional businesses, languages and customs are disappearing.

15.

Identify the central issue in this scenario.

[1 mark]

The issue here is urbanisation.

The issue is the impact of urban development and population growth on cultural identity and traditional communities.

16.

Identify TWO causes of the changes taking place in the community.

[2 marks]

An mass poplation growth can be deduced to the growing number of modernized apartment buildings and shopping centers to house an increased number of consumers.

Young people prioritizing their education and employment for better pay has lead to a migration of youth from rrural areas to live in cities.

17.

Explain ONE consequence of the changes.

Your answer should show a clear cause → consequence relationship.

[2 marks]

A decrease in youth living in these rural areas could possibly lead to loss of cultural traditions and identity as they forget their background and

identity is lost when the last of the generation who practices these traditions dies. Additionally, this can lead to a loss in sense of identity in newer generations.

The replacement of traditional neighbourhoods and the movement of older residents away could lead to the loss of traditional businesses, languages and customs, weakening the community's cultural identity.

18.

Give ONE possible positive consequence and ONE possible negative consequence of increasing cultural diversity.

[2 marks]

An increase in cultural diversity could lead to new connections between cultures and an enriched understanding of different percpectives. However, it could also possibly lead to the loss of traditional languages and customs, or possibly disharmony between conflicting customs and beleifs.

SECTION D — PERSPECTIVES

[6 marks]

Read the two sources.

Source A — Local business owner

“The redevelopment of our neighbourhood is necessary. New businesses bring employment and attract visitors. We cannot expect communities to remain exactly as they were forever. Young people need opportunities, and economic development can improve their quality of life.”

Source B — Local historian

“Development is happening too quickly. When historic buildings and traditional businesses disappear, we lose part of our community's identity. Economic growth is important, but it should not come at the expense of our cultural heritage.”

19.

What is the main perspective of Source A?

[1 mark]

The main perspective of source A is that redevelopment of neighbourhood is necessary for the growth of new buisnesses.

20.

What is the main perspective of Source B?

[1 mark]

The main perspective of source B is that Development is happening too quickly and leads to loss in the community’s identity.

21.

Identify TWO factors that may have influenced the perspectives of the two people.

For each factor, explain how it could influence their viewpoint.

[4 marks]

Think about things such as:

  • background

  • occupation

  • experiences

  • values

  • interests

  • location

  • knowledge

  • age/generation

Several factors may have influenced the two different perspectives. For one, their age and generation may impact how they see the progess of a developing world. One who is older may appreciate the value of keeping historical sites and traditions intact, whilst a younger individual may hold importance to allowing modernization to happen. Both individuals also have different interests at heart considering their professions; one being a historian and the other a local business owner. The business owner in this case prioritizes the need for economic growth and expansion of their business, which is most acheivable via modernization, while a historian’s job is to appraise the history of a community.

SECTION E — EVALUATING PERSPECTIVES

[4 marks]

Now compare the two sources.

22.

Identify ONE similarity between the perspectives.

[1 mark]

Both percpectives value the importance of the well'-being of their communites.

23.

Identify ONE important difference between the perspectives.

[1 mark]

While one percpective may prioritise the importance of a community’s growth in the economical aspect ( source A) source B presents the importance of mantaining vital historical and cultural identity.

24.

Which source would be more useful to someone investigating the question:

“Does urban development always have a negative effect on cultural identity?”

Choose Source A or Source B and explain your answer.

⚠ You must discuss the source's perspective and why that makes it useful.

[2 marks]

Source A would be a more usefull source to use in this case, as it explores why urbanisation isn’t always a bad thing, and has multiple reasons as to why that is that can be easily supported with evidence.

Source A would be more useful because the business owner's perspective shows that urban development can have positive effects, such as creating employment and improving quality of life. This provides a counter-perspective to the idea that urban development always harms cultural identity.

🧠 SECTION F — THE BIG ONE

[BONUS: 5 marks]

This is the kind of question where I want you to actually analyse, not just label things.

Read this statement:

“Modern technology is destroying traditional culture. Young people spend all their time online and therefore no longer care about their communities. If this continues, traditional cultures will disappear completely.”

25.

Identify THREE weaknesses or questionable features of this argument.

For each one, explain why it weakens the statement.

You could consider:

  • generalisation

  • evidence

  • prediction

  • assumption

  • language

  • reasoning

  • bias

  • whether the conclusion actually follows

[5 marks]
