Step 2: Disinfecting
The second step of infection control is disinfection.
Remember that disinfection is the process that eliminates most, but not necessarily all, microorganisms on nonporous surfaces. Disinfecting is not effective against bacterial spores.
When disinfecting a surface, tools, or equipment, a chemical product called a disinfectant is used.
DISINFECTANTS
Disinfectant is a chemical product approved by the EPA that is designed to destroy most bacteria (excluding spores), fungi, and viruses on surfaces. EPA registers all types of disinfectants sold in the United States
Disinfectants MUST have the following labels in the product:
• The list of pathogens against which it is effective; should include: HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), HBV (hepatitis B virus), and MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus); if Pseudomonas aeruginosa is included, the disinfectant will kill other lesser bacteria
• EPA registration number (indicated on a product label by "EPA Reg. No." near the manufacturer's name)
• The words: bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal
• Mixing and changing instructions
❗Never use disinfectants as hand cleaners since this can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Disinfectants are pesticides and can be harmful if absorbed through the skin.❗
