Literary Devices and Authors:

  • What is the setting of the story? On Ship-Trap Island

  • What are the character traits of Rainsford and Zaroff? Zaroff respects the prey he hunts, even when they are people who are "the scum of the earth." He treats them well but has embraced the idea of hunting people since his time in the military. Rainsford, on the other hand, is revolted by the idea of killing people and only does so out of self-defense.

  • How is the ending ironic? Rainsford always calls himself a good hunter when he ends up being the one hunted

“To Build a Fire”

  • What was the location and time period of the Yukon Gold Rush? near the Klondike River in Canada's Yukon Territory, in 1896. 

  • How does the character’s pride and ignorance of others lead to his downfall? His overconfidence in his abilities and disregard for the advice of more experienced individuals result in fatal mistakes in the harsh wilderness, ultimately causing his death.

“To Serve Man”

  • In what ways are the Kanamit able to get the humans to trust them? They promise many good things and promise to make their society better. 

  • What is a physical description of the Kanamit? They were short and hairy, they had piglike noses, and three fingers on each hand. 

  • What is the plot twist and play on words that the story ultimately is? The plot twist is that the Kanamit really just wanted to eat the people and make them “fatter” so they would have more to eat.

The Hound of the Baskervilles:

  • Red Herring - This is something that can lead one towards a false conclusion, particularly in detective novels.

  • Alibi - A claim or piece of evidence that someone was elsewhere when a crime took place

  • Witness - a person who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place.

  • Evidence - Information that suggests whether a belief is true or valid.

  • Whodunnit - This is a type of mystery where you don’t know who the killer is until the very end 

  • Suspect - A suspect is someone who is believed to have committed a crime.

  • Flashback - A scene in a movie or book that is set in a time earlier than the main story

  • Locked room - is committed in circumstances under which it appeared impossible for the perpetrator to enter the crime scene, commit the crime, and leave undetected.

  • Interrogation - This means to question someone

HOB:

  • Why did the author include the cane scene in the first chapter? To give backstory on the both of them and to give us a feel for the characters. 

  • Compare and Contrast Holmes and Watson - Watson likes to jump to conclusions when Holmes wants to sit back and get all the facts before concluding. 

  • How could HOB be considered a work of Gothic literature? It has a gloomy setting, Women in distress, and supernatural. 

  • Who was the ultimate villain and what was his motive? Stapelton; he wanted the inheritance.

  • What are the “dead ends” that Holmes and Watson ended up encountering? The cab driver, the boots, the cash register. 

  • How do the Barrymore’s initially present themselves as suspects? They act suspicious with the window and the crying

  • What is the curse of the Baskervilles? The hound kills everyone in the family because of Sir Hugo Baskerville

  • What is the role of Seldon and what is his demise? He is the convict that escaped. He is Mrs. Barrymore's brother. He ends up tripping on a rick, breaking his neck, and dies.

  • What makes the grimpen mire mysterious opposed to what it actually is? It is foggy, gloomy and it just looks scarier than it is. 

OMAM:

  • Know the characteristics of an intellectual disability - Memory problems, IQ below 70, and not capable of independent living. 

  • Know why he feels like he has to help Lennie - His Aunt Clara asked if he would help take care of him when she died. 

  • State why she is not given a name - It symbolizes that she doesn't have her own life, it shows us that she takes curley’s name because she lives curley’s life. 

  • Explain how she causes conflict between Lennie and Curley - Curley's wife knows her beauty is her power, and she uses it to flirt with the ranch hands and make her husband jealous and lennie is usually tempted by that

  • Describe how his dog causes tension amongst those at the ranch - He smells and is old and causes the workers to not like it because it stinks everywhere he is. 

  • Identify the multiple characters that he has conflicts with and why - George and Lennie because they are new people and they cause conflicts with Curley.
