Treaty of Versailles

What is the treat of Versailles

  • It was a treaty signed at the end of WW1, and unlike other treaty’s it was extremely long and targetted Germany by taking as much power away from then as possible.

→ article 231: germany and its allies accept responsibility for causing damange and loss to the allied powers.

→ article 233: germany will pay for damange done to civil population and property of the allied governments

  • They made it in hopes to prevent another war from starting in the future, which was however unsuccessful

  • During this the league of nations was also made.

Key contributors to the Treaty

  • George Clamenceau: (france) had the harshest wishes for germany as they had suffered the more extensive land loss and war loss. he wanted to return alsae lorraine to france and independent rhineland. he did not support the league of nations and also wanted germany to pay large reparations and disband the german army to take away their power and ability to start a new war (power).

  • Woodrow Wilson: (USA) he did not support revenge and harshness towards germany as USA was invloved in the war at a later period and didnt suffer from as harsh damages. his goal was to create the treaty based off of his fourteen points as well as create the league of nations to prevent futher wars. he supported that germany should not be blamed for the war.

  • David loyd geroge: (britain) he was inbetween on his perspective, as britain did suffer not as much land loss however greater land loss. he did support making germany pay for their damages but still allow the enough to trade, all this while asking to safeguard britains supremacy.

Why WW1 led to WW2

  • it was believed that ww1 had extensive impact on the europeans way of thinking, it brutalised them and ww1 made it very apparent to them that such a large scale war was not only doable but also thinkable. it was believed that the treaty actually led to the second world war. world war one created a very unstable economy for germany and other nations and led to arised tention between the nations. this was seen as essentially planting the seed for the second world war. the war created such lust of revenge and such anger for the germans because they had been stripped entirely of their power. it created an “us against the world” mentality and drove very powerful figures such as Hitler to think that is germany did it again they could do it better and win. this was the starting drive and essentially the world wars was just two stages of global conflict that was never resolved.
