Summary of "Taraban the Archer"
Introduction
Once upon a time, in a Tsardom in Russia, there was a talented archer named Taraban. He was renowned for his hunting skills and one day, after spotting seven beautiful ducks, he chose not to shoot them when he discovered they could transform into maidens.
Transformation and Marriage
Taraban stealthily took the silver wings of the most beautiful maiden as they bathed. When she realized her wings were missing, she remained behind to search for them. Taraban, filled with pity, returned them to her, resulting in their marriage. The maiden was taken by Taraban to the Tsar, who became infatuated with her beauty and demanded his ministers search for another woman like her.
The Tsar's Commands
The Tsar, finding no one comparable, commanded Taraban to find the forest monster Muzhichek and his invisible servant, Schmat-Razum, threatening Taraban with dire consequences if he failed.
The Quest Begins
Taraban informed his wife, who recognized the task as impossible without help. She advised him to seek the assistance of her little mother, giving him a crystal ball and a silk handkerchief to help on his journey.
Journey to Find Schmat-Razum
After a long journey, Taraban reached a splendid palace where he met the mother of his wife. Despite his search, she could not provide the exact whereabouts of Muzhichek but summoned creatures to ask about Schmat-Razum, only to be left in despair until an old frog revealed Muzhichek's location and offered to guide him.
Confronting Muzhichek
Upon reaching Muzhichek's cavern, Taraban waited until the forest monster called for his servant. Taking advantage of the moment, Taraban befriended Schmat-Razum, convincing him to leave Muzhichek and serve him instead.
Return Journey and Magic Gifts
Taraban and Schmat-Razum enjoyed a brief respite on their journey home, where the servant showcased his magical abilities, impressing a ship's captain who attempted to buy him. Ultimately, Taraban refused to part with Schmat-Razum.
Confrontation with the Tsar
Upon returning to his Tsardom, Taraban discovered his wife was imprisoned by the Tsar, who had sought her for himself. Taraban confronted the Tsar, using the magical gifts (the horn, bowl, and casket) to summon an army and defeat the tyrannical ruler.
Conclusion
With the Tsar defeated, Taraban was crowned and ruled wisely alongside his wife, Schmat-Razum remaining a loyal servant, thus living a life of joy and prosperity.
