High-frequency and Galvanic

1. What kind of current does high frequency use, explain how this current works and what kind of effect it produces.

The High frequency has an alternating or sinusodial current. This is a smooth, repetitive alternating current and it produces a heat effect. It passes through the device that allows for the selection of tesla pule current. It can produce a frequency of 60,000 to 200,000 hertz.

2. What are the two types of gas electrodes used in high-frequency? What color will show up in each? What types of skin should they be used on?

  • Argon- Violet color and is good for normal/oily skin type (acne)

  • Neon- pink/orange color sensitive or mature skin

3 Name 5 benefits of high frequency.

  • Antiseptic effect

  • Stimulates circulation

  • Oxygenates the skin

  • Increases cell metabolism

  • Helps to coagulate lesions

  • Warm and relaxing

    • All of these a healing properties

4 List 2 ways that you could use high-frequency during the facial?

  • To be used after extractions (helps the inflammations)

  • At the end of a facial (before moisturizer and SPF)

5. What is an ion?

  • Ion Electrical charge atom

6. What are two significant reactions of galvanic current? Describe their effects on the skin.

  • Disincrustation which softens the skin and has a negative charge

  • Iontophoresis- Introduces water soluble products into the skin (penetrates)

7. Explain what Saponification is.

  • Disincrustrations

  • Alkaline action- producing negative ions

  • Produces a soapy film- Chemical reaction that transform the sebum of the skin into soap

8. When should you apply galvanic current during a facial?

  • Should be used before extractions or any time of the facial that you want to introduce water double product into the skin

9. What is the difference between Anaphoresis and Cataphoresis?

  • Anaphresis: Refers to infusion of negative product (negative charge) such as desincrustation fluid, alkaline reaction, softens and relaxes tissue, stimulates nerve endings, and increases blood circulation

  • Cataphoresis: Positive charge; infusion of product and causes acidic reaction, tightens the skin, clams or soothes nerve endings, decreases blood flow.

10. Name 4 effects of Anaphoresis.

  • Desincrustation fluid, alkaline reaction, softens and relaxes tissue, stimulates nerve endings, and increases blood circulation

11. Name 4 effects of Cataphoresis.

  • causes an acidic reaction, tightens the skin, clams or soothes nerve endings, decreases blood flow.

12. What are some important tips when using galvanic current?

  • Keep even contact

  • Turn the machine off before lifting off the face

  • Water-based products only!

  • Monitor the strength

13. List 10 contraindications of using electrotherapy on clients.

  • Metal implants

  • Pacemaker

  • Braces

  • Heart conditions

  • Epilepsy

  • Pregnancy

  • High blood pressure

  • fever/infections

  • Nerve issues/ diabetes

  • Broken skin

  • Inflamed pustules

  • Rosacea

  • Chronic migraines/headaches

  • Phobia of electricity/ anxiety
