Group 1, 7, 0

Alkali metals:

  • One electron in the outer shell, very reactive

  • Soft

  • Low density

  • As you go down reactivity increases, boiling point & melting point drecrease

  • When reacting with water they react vigorously to produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides

  • When reacting with chlorine they react vigorously and form white metal chloride salts

  • Reaction with oxygen forms metal oxide,

  • Group one is more reactive than transition metals.

Halogens:

  • All non metals with coloured vapours

  • As you go down reactivity decreases, melting and boiling point increases

  • For 1- ions called halides when they bind with metals.

  • More reactive halogens displace less reactive ones in their compounds

Noble gases:

  • 8 electrons in outer shell which means they have a full outer shell

  • Colourless at room temperature

  • Non flammable

  • Boiling point and melting points increase as you go down
