Lesson 1 : Facts about South Africa

South Africa has three capital cities : Pretoria, Cape Town & Bloemfontein. However, the bigger city is Johannesburg.

South Africa was colonized by the Dutch & the British. It gained independence on May 31^s 1961. South Africa was ruled by apartheid (racial segregation) for 46 years. The flag was first used on freedom day in 1994.

There are eleven official languages in South Africa. 80% of inhabitants are Black South Africans.

Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist. He was jailed for 27 years & then became the first democratic president.
