Classical Naming of Ionic Compounds
- We can use a suffix instead of a roman numeral to show whether the metal in an ionic compound has the higher ionic charge from the periodic table or the lower ionic charge.
- We use the root latin names for the metal from your reference sheet
- We put a suffix “ic” or “ous” on the root name to show if the metal has the lower or higher charge from the periodic table.
- if it ends in “ic”, the metal has the higher charge from the periodic table
- if it ends in “ous”, the metal has the lower charge from the periodic table
