Chapters 1-3:


Peril- Serious and immediate danger


Anguish- Severe mental or physical pain or suffering


Liquidate- To sell off what is owned for cash


Sublime- Such excellence of beauty as to inspire great admiration 


Exterminate- Destroy completely


Surreptitious- Kept secret that would not be approved of sharing


Rescinded- To revoke, cancel, or repeal a law or order


Conflagration- An extensive fire which destroys a great deal of land or property


Oppressor- A person or group that oppresses people


Prominent- Important; famous



Chapters 4-5:


Tumult- a loud, confused noise, mostly caused by large groups of people


Paternal- of or appropriate to a father


Barracks- buildings designed to house military personnel


Compulsory- required by law or a rule; obligatory


Evoke- to call forth or summon


Reprieve- cancel or postpone the punishment of someone


Elude- evade or escape from danger, typically in a unique way


Infernal- Referring to hell, the underworld, or something diabolical


Wizened- shriveled or wrinkled with age


Harangue- a lengthy and aggressive speech


Chapters 6-7:


Vitality- strength or energy

Indifference- loss of interest or emotional response

Notorious- well known for negative reasons

Cauldron- large vessel for boiling or stewing

Vulnerable- openly unprotected or at risk

Apathy- lack of concern

Emaciated- extreme thinness

Elapsed- passed over time

Lament- to express deep grief

Convoy- a group moving together for protection


Chapters 8-9:


Poignant- deeply moving

Prostrate- stretched out and weak

Beseech- stretched out and weak

Riveted- firmly fixed in attention

Spectacle- unpleasant or striking scene

Inert- motionless and weak

Transgress- break a rule or boundary

Disheveled- worn out and messy

Plaintive- mournful

Morbid- unhealthy or grim
