  • Case conceptualization

    • Working hypothesis informs the treatment plan and vice versa

      • The more accurate a diagnosis the better informed the working hypothesis and treatment plan will be. Otherwise we will have to tweak the treatment as sessions continue

        • Includes:

          • Diagnosis/Symptoms

          • Formative Influences

          • Situation/interpersonal (significant events, what brought them in)

          • Biological, genetic, & medical factors

          • Strengths and assets

          • Automatic thoughts, emotions, & behaviors

          • Underlying schemas

  • Collaborative Empiricism

    • Shared responsibilities at every phase

    • Empirically examine problematic thoughts & behaviors for validity and/or utility

  • The alliance allows both parties to view cognitive distortions and maladaptive behaviors through an empirical lens that can assist in identifying opportunities for greater rationality, sx relief, and improved functioning.

  • Therapist is highly active in sessions
