Fundamentals of Atomic Structure

An atom is the smallest fundamental building block of all matter. Every atom is constructed from three primary subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These subatomic particles are distributed between the central atomic nucleus and the surrounding space.

Protons are positively charged subatomic particles located within the nucleus of the atom. The total quantity of protons defines the atomic number of the particle, which uniquely determines the specific chemical element.

Neutrons are electrically neutral subatomic particles located within the nucleus alongside protons. The number of neutrons in a nucleus determines whether a particle exists as a particular isotope.

Isotopes are defined as atoms that possess the exact same number of protons but differ in their number of neutrons. Because isotopes have identical proton numbers and corresponding electron configurations, they possess nearly identical chemical properties. However, their physical and overall mass-dependent properties differ due to the variation in neutron content.

Electrons are negatively charged subatomic particles that continuously orbit around the atomic nucleus.

The atomic mass represents the total combined count of protons and neutrons within an atom's nucleus. The atomic number represents the number of protons in the nucleus, which dictates the fundamental identity of the element.

Organization and Components of the Periodic Table

The periodic table is a tabular system that arranges all known chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number. This organized framework provides critical fundamental information regarding each element.

Groups are the vertical columns in the periodic table. Elements located within the same vertical group possess similar chemical properties.

Periods are the horizontal rows in the periodic table. Elements in a period are arranged sequentially by increasing atomic number.

The periodic table displays essential quantitative and qualitative information for each chemical element. This includes the chemical symbol of the element (for example, HH for hydrogen / Wasserstoff), its atomic number, and its atomic mass.

Main groups (Hauptgruppen) indicate the characteristic ionic charges of the elements contained within them:

  • Main Group 1 elements carry a charge of +1+1

  • Main Group 2 elements carry a charge of +2+2

  • Main Group 3 elements carry a charge of +3+3

  • Main Group 4 elements carry a charge of +4+4

  • Main Group 5 elements carry a charge of 3-3

  • Main Group 6 elements carry a charge of 2-2

  • Main Group 7 elements carry a charge of 1-1

  • Main Group 8 elements carry no charge (neutral)

Subgroups (Nebengruppen) contain elements whose ionic charge is specified using Roman numerals located directly behind the atomic designation or element name.

Classification of Chemical Substances: Elements and Compounds

Substances are classified based on their underlying atomic composition into elements and chemical compounds.

Elements are substances that consist exclusively of a single type of atom. Because all atoms in an element contain the exact same atomic number, the substance consists of uniform atomic matter.

Compounds are substances composed of two or more different types of atoms chemically combined together.
