Acids and Alkalis

  • Hydrochloric acid = HCl

  • Sulfric acid = H2SO4

  • Nitric acid = HNO3

In aqueous solutions, acids form hydrogen ions (H+)

- Bases are chemicals that can neutralise acids to produce a salt and water

- Bases are usually metal oxides or metal hydroxides

- Bases that are soluble in water are called alkalis

- Bases can neutralise acids and produce a salt and water

In aqueous solutions, alkalis produce hydroxide ions (OH-)

  • A pH probe detects the pH electronically and is more accurate

  • The UI changes the colour of the item

acids + alkali → water / H+ + OH- → H2O
