Visual Processing and Recognition

Modularity:

  • the ventral system enables us to recognize various object categories. The brain has different parts to identify different body parts. And recognition happens when that visual info matches the detection mechanisms.

Single-Cell Object Recognition:

  • one neuron responding to seeing or recognizing a specific object, like a face or shape.

Perceptual Constancy:

  • we see things as staying the same even when the lighting, angle, or distance changes — like recognizing a friend’s face whether they’re close up or far away.

The 6 Gestalt Principles:

  1. proximity

  2. similarity

  3. continuity

  4. connectedness

  5. closure

  6. simplicity
