1. Be able to assign oxidation numbers:

2. Be familiar with the process of oxidation and reduction and what is the indication that each

has happened.

3. Balance redox reactions:

EX: K + H 2 O K + + H 2

4. Be familiar with oxidizing and reducing agents

5. Understand the reaction of Voltaic cell.

6. Know the following:

-Anode

-Cathode

7. Understand some uses of Voltaic cells

8. be familiar with the uses of electrolytic cells.

9. Be able to draw voltaic cells and write the half reactions and the overall reactions occurring at

the anode and cathode.

10. Differentiate between voltaic and electrolytic cells.

11. Be able to calculate the cell potential and determine which species will be the anode and

cathode based on the cell potential.

12. Be able to draw an electrolytic cell and determine the products at the anode and cathode.
