Nuclear Reactions

Unstable Elements and Mass Elements can be unstable without changing their mass. This instability arises when they possess either too many particles.

Fusion and Fission
Fusion is defined as things coming together. Fission is defined as things splitting apart.

  • Fusion involves lighter nuclei combining to form a heavier nucleus, typically releasing a large amount of energy.

  • An example of nuclear fusion is what happens in stars, where hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium.

  • Fission involves a heavy nucleus splitting into two or more lighter nuclei. This process also releases a significant amount of energy.

  • Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission, often involving uranium isotopes, to generate electricity.
