Introduction

  • The circulatory system consists of several key components, including:

    • Heart

    • Blood vessels

Major Structures of Blood Vessels

  • Most larger blood vessel walls are composed of three major layers, each containing sublayering:

    • Tunica Intima

    • Tunica Media

    • Tunica Adventitia

Blood Vessel Structure

Tunica Intima
  • Composed of a simple squamous epithelium lining the lumen.

  • Includes:

    • Subendothelial Layer of Loose CT: Found in most medium to large vessels and may contain scattered smooth muscle in larger vessels.

    • Internal Elastic Lamina (Elastic Interna): This layer marks the boundary between the tunica intima and the tunica media.

Tunica Media
  • Contains layers that can vary between:

    • Elastic Laminae (Fenestrated Sheets)

    • Loose Connective Tissue (CT) alternating with layers of:

    • Smooth Muscle

  • External Elastic Lamina: If present, this layer marks the boundary between the tunica media and the tunica adventitia.

Tunica Adventitia
  • Composed of loose to moderately dense connective tissue and may contain scattered smooth muscle cells.

  • Small and medium arteries and veins are present here, with tunica adventitia being significantly thicker in large arteries and veins.

Large Veins
  • Layers include:

    • Tunica Externa

    • Tunica Media

    • Tunica Intima

Elastic Arteries
  • Similar structure as large veins but emphasizes:

    • Internal Elastic Layer marking tunica intima

Muscular Arteries
  • Composed of:

    • Tunica Intima: Thin with distinct internal elastic lamina, usually folded.

    • Tunica Media: Contains 5-40 layers of circular smooth muscle and a small amount of connective tissue.

    • Thickness decreases with the decrease in the diameter of the artery.

    • Tunica Adventitia: Thick consisting of loose connective tissue.

Medium-Sized Veins
  • Structure includes:

    • Tunica Intima: Thin with endothelium, thin subendothelial layer, may be folded.

    • Tunica Media: Thin, circular smooth muscle, collagen, and elastic fibers.

    • Tunica Adventitia: Well-developed,

    • Function: Collect blood from smaller venous vessels.

Arterioles
  • Structure:

    • Tunica Intima: Very thin consisting only of endothelium.

    • Tunica Media: Composed of 1-5 layers of smooth muscle and some elastic fibers.

    • Tunica Adventitia: Thin with longitudinally arranged collagen and elastic fibers.

  • Function: Redistribute blood flow to capillaries and alter blood pressure by adjusting peripheral resistance.

Capillaries
  • Structure:

    • Comprised ONLY of endothelium.

  • Types of Capillaries:

    • Continuous (Type I): Thick cytoplasm; continuous capillary wall.

    • Fenestrated (Type II): Extremely thin cytoplasm.

    • Sinusoidal Capillaries: Larger diameter.

  • Functions include:

    • Normal exchange of materials between blood and tissue fluid.

    • May allow exit of White Blood Cells (WBCs) from blood into tissue, particularly in venules.

Venules
  • Structure:

    • Larger diameter than capillaries, composed of endothelium surrounded by pericytes.

  • Functions:

    • Collect blood from capillaries.

    • Respond to vasoactive agents by altering permeability.

Larger Muscular Venules
  • Structure:

    • Tunica Intima: Thin with endothelium and outer sheath of collagen fibers.

    • Tunica Media: Thin with 1-3 layers of circular smooth muscle, collagen, and elastic fibers.

    • Tunica Adventitia: Thick loose connective tissue containing longitudinal collagen and scattered elastic fibers.

Small to Medium Veins
  • Structure:

    • Tunica Intima: Thin with a thin subendothelial layer, may have valves.

    • Tunica Media: Thin with circular smooth muscle and some collagen/elastic fibers.

    • Tunica Adventitia: Well developed with loose connective tissue and longitudinally arranged fibers.

  • Function: Collect blood from smaller venous vessels.

Large Veins
  • Structure:

    • Tunica Intima: Thicker than in smaller veins.

    • Tunica Media: Thin, poorly developed.

    • Tunica Adventitia: Very thick, consisting of moderately dense connective tissue.

  • Function: Collect blood from medium-sized veins and return it to the heart.

Comparative Overview of Vessel and Layer Types

  • Arterial vs. Venous Layers:

    • Elastic Arteries:

    • Tunica intima: Thin

    • Tunica media: Very thick with elastic lamellae.

    • Muscular Arteries:

    • Tunica media: Thick smooth muscle present.
