Definitions:
Development = Development is a process of change and improvement in the standard of living of people in a country over a period of time.
MEDC - more economically developed country.
LEDC - less economically developed country.

GDP - gross domestic product. The total value of all goods and services produced by a country, a statistic.
IMR - infant mortality. How many infants die within one year of birth per 1000.
HDI - human development index. Measured from 0 (worst) to 1 (best). Uses GDP, LE and Literacy rate. Developed by the UN.
LE - life expectancy. How long the average person lives in the country.

Factors Affecting Levels of Development:
History:
Colonialism.
Industrial Revolution.
Slavery.
Neo-Colonialism = New forms of colonialism. A company that sells in MEDCs, but produces in LEDCs.
Trade:
LEDCs usually export raw materials which sell for less than manufactured goods.
Technology and Industrialisation:
Mass production.
Rapid urbanisation.
Require high literacy rate.
LEDCs sell product locally and don’t mass produce.
Health and Welfare:
Development can’t take place if the people are barely surviving.
Need enough food, healthy workers and clean services.
Education and Training:
Someone must have skills to work.
Political Stability:
Wars, civil unrest and riots all slow development as resources are used to stop these issues.
Infrastructure is destroyed and people stop working.
