Development

Definitions:

  • Development = Development is a process of change and improvement in the standard of living of people in a country over a period of time.

  • MEDC - more economically developed country.

  • LEDC - less economically developed country.

  • GDP - gross domestic product. The total value of all goods and services produced by a country, a statistic.

  • IMR - infant mortality. How many infants die within one year of birth per 1000.

  • HDI - human development index. Measured from 0 (worst) to 1 (best). Uses GDP, LE and Literacy rate. Developed by the UN.

  • LE - life expectancy. How long the average person lives in the country.

Indicators:

Economic:

  • GDP.

  • GDP/c.

Environmental:

  • Urban-rural population.

  • Sustainable use of resources.

  • Carbon emmissions.

Social:

  • Diet.

  • Healthcare.

  • Housing.

  • Human rights.

  • Literacy/education.

  • Life expectancy.

Factors Affecting Levels of Development:

History:

  • Colonialism.

  • Industrial Revolution.

  • Slavery.

  • Neo-Colonialism = New forms of colonialism. A company that sells in MEDCs, but produces in LEDCs.

Trade:

  • LEDCs usually export raw materials which sell for less than manufactured goods.

Technology and Industrialisation:

  • Mass production.

  • Rapid urbanisation.

  • Require high literacy rate.

  • LEDCs sell product locally and don’t mass produce.

Health and Welfare:

  • Development can’t take place if the people are barely surviving.

  • Need enough food, healthy workers and clean services.

Education and Training:

  • Someone must have skills to work.

Political Stability:

  • Wars, civil unrest and riots all slow development as resources are used to stop these issues.

  • Infrastructure is destroyed and people stop working.
