Describe what St Catherine of Siena taught about being made imago dei. (5)
1 st catherine explains how humans originate from god. she explains how humankind's 'DIGNITY IS IN CREATION, SEEING THAT SHE IS IN THE IMAGE OF GOD ' this is explaining that being in the image of god, we see human life is sacred.
2 secondly, she teaches that our conscience is god's truth in our lives. she says 'IN THAT SAME MIRROR OF THE GOODNESS OF GOD, THE SOUL KNOWS HER OWN INDIGNITY' meaning when we look in the mirror of god → own sinfulness as god is perfectly pure.
3 she teaches that god created out of love. 'FOR BY LOVE INDEED YOU CREATED HER' showing god loved humanity enough to create humans in his own image, something we can see for ourselves in genesis 1 when god created humans
Describe Catholics beliefs on the sanctity of life. (5)
1 they believe that human life is sacred. they get this view from genesis 1 and 2 where humans are made in imago dei and god gave us the breath of life.
2 they believe the human body is a temple (as stated by St. paul). this means that to harm a human is to harm god.
3 they believe humans are sacred as they are made in the image and likeness of god and this is what gives humans dignity. Michelangelo was influenced by this belief to paint Adam in the reflection of god
4 they believe that life should be preserved as it states in the 10 commandments 'thou shall not kill'. due to this catholics see abortion as murder
5 they believe in sanctity of life as psalm states that god ‘knitted us in the womb’. this shows he took time to create us and was reinforced by jesus who asked ‘aren’t you worth more than sparrows?’
