Aerial Roots

  • Definition: Aerial roots grow out of the stem and absorb moisture from the air.

  • Function: Primarily to gather moisture and some dissolved minerals from the environment.

Epiphytic vs. Parasitic Plants

  • Epiphytic Plants:

    • Grow on other plants without harming them.

    • They are supported by the host plant for better access to sunlight.

    • Often found in rainforests, collecting water and nutrients from moist air and debris.

  • Parasitic Plants:

    • Attach to host plants and extract water and nutrients directly from their vascular systems.

    • Example: Ivy can severely damage the structure it clings to.

Climbing Roots

  • Description: Climbing roots are typically part of plants that also have regular roots in soil.

  • Adaptation: These roots exhibit a tropism that responds to light, seeking darkness and thus finding cracks in structures (like brick walls).

  • Evolution: Originally evolved for climbing up other plants, they have adapted to urban structures.

Pneumatophores

  • Definition: Specialized aerial roots that extend above water-saturated soil, enabling plants to access oxygen.

  • Location: Commonly found in mangrove swamps, where soil is continuously wet.

  • Function: Help in oxygen absorption while primary roots gather water and nutrients underwater.

Buttress Roots

  • Definition: Large, supportive roots that grow from the base of tall trees.

  • Function: Provide stability to prevent trees from falling over, especially in soft soil conditions or while leaning toward light.

  • Characteristics: Often asymmetrical, with growth variations based on the tree's angle to help support it adequately.

  • Example: Visible in large tropical rainforests and widely photographed for their impressive size and structure.
