Procedural Steps and Point Allocation

•   - Takes or verbalizes appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) precautions: $1$ point.

  - Appropriately determines the need for an epinephrine auto-injector: $1$ point.     

- Clinical Requirement: The patient must exhibit an anaphylactic reaction, which includes shock and/or respiratory insufficiency.  

 - Contacts medical direction for authorization as indicated per local protocol: $1$ point.

•  - Checks the medication for the expiration date: $1$ point.   

• - Checks the medication for cloudiness or discoloration: $1$ point.

•  - Removes safety cap(s) from the auto-injector: $1$ point.

•   - Selects the injection site, specifically the middle of the outer thigh: $1$ point.  

•  - Pushes the injector firmly against the site at a $90^\circ$ angle to the leg: $1$ point.  

•  - Holds the injector against the site for a minimum of $3$ seconds: $1$ point.  

•  - Massages the site for $10$ seconds: $1$ point.

•   - Properly discards the auto-injector in an appropriate container: $1$ point.  

•  - Verbalizes proper documentation of the medication administration: $1$ point.  

•  - Verbalizes the reassessment of the patient: $1$ point.
