Procedural Steps and Point Allocation

  •   - Takes or verbalizes appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) precautions: 11 point.

  - Appropriately determines the need for an epinephrine auto-injector: 11 point.     

- Clinical Requirement: The patient must exhibit an anaphylactic reaction, which includes shock and/or respiratory insufficiency.  

 - Contacts medical direction for authorization as indicated per local protocol: 11 point.

  •  - Checks the medication for the expiration date: 11 point.   

  • - Checks the medication for cloudiness or discoloration: 11 point.

  •  - Removes safety cap(s) from the auto-injector: 11 point.

  •   - Selects the injection site, specifically the middle of the outer thigh: 11 point.  

  •  - Pushes the injector firmly against the site at a 9090^\circ angle to the leg: 11 point.  

  •  - Holds the injector against the site for a minimum of 33 seconds: 11 point.  

  •  - Massages the site for 1010 seconds: 11 point.

  •   - Properly discards the auto-injector in an appropriate container: 11 point.  

  •  - Verbalizes proper documentation of the medication administration: 11 point.  

  •  - Verbalizes the reassessment of the patient: 11 point.
