Scatterplots

  • Scatterplot graphs are used to identify patterns related to when behaviors occur.
  • The points on a scatterplot are not connected because the plot typically covers multiple days and times, looking for clusters and overlap of instances of the target behavior.
  • The structured nature of schools makes scatterplots very useful to behavior analysts in that setting.
  • Scatterplots are commonly used in schools to identify circumstances and times of day when behaviors occur more frequently.

Interpreting Scatterplots

  • If many data points appear around one time of day, it signals the behavior analyst to take a closer look at what is going on during that time to determine a possible function for the target behavior.
  • Data Collection:
    • At the end of each interval of time, the technician marks whether or not the target behavior was observed each day.
    • This data is then graphed in hopes that patterns become evident.
    • Ideally, clusters of data points are observed during similar times across multiple days.
  • This gives the behavior analyst an idea of where to start when working to address the target behavior.

  • Axes:
    • X-axis: Day of the week
    • Y-axis: Number of observed instances of hitting
  • Observation:
    • Hitting behaviors are observed most frequently on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
  • Action:
    • This should signal the behavior analyst to schedule supervision sessions on these days to try to determine the function of the hitting behavior.
