Fundamentals of Biological Reproduction
- Reproduction is the biological process through which organisms give rise to new individuals of their own kind.
- This process is essential for the continuance of a species on Earth across generations.
- Organisms utilize different methods to reproduce, categorized broadly into asexual and sexual reproduction.
- Asexual reproduction does not involve gametes (eggs or sperms). Examples include:
- Single-celled organisms like Amoeba which reproduce by dividing into two.
- Multicellular animals like Hydra which produce small buds that grow, separate, and lead independent lives.
- Sexual reproduction involves two sexes: males and females. They produce specialized reproductive cells called gametes (sperms in males and eggs/ova in females).
- A zygote is formed when a sperm and an egg fuse. This zygote eventually develops into an individual that resembles its parents.
Asexual Reproduction in Animals
- Fission:
- This is the most common method in single-celled organisms such as Amoeba and Paramecium.
- In binary fission in Amoeba, the parent organism divides into two daughter common amoebae.
- The process begins with the division of the nucleus, followed by the division of the cytoplasm, leading to the separation of two offsprings.
- Budding:
- Buds grow on the outside of the parent body.
- These buds detach themselves once they are large enough for independent existence.
- This is a common method of reproduction in Hydra.
- Regeneration:
- Certain animals like Hydra and starfish possess the ability to regrow lost or missing body parts.
- This process can also serve reproductive purposes.
- If a Hydra is cut transversely into 2−3 pieces, each piece can regenerate into a new individual.
- Similarly, if the flatworm Planaria is cut into 5−6 pieces, every piece develops into a young worm.
Anatomy of the Human Female Reproductive System
- Ovaries:
- These are two whitish oval bodies located in the lower half of the abdomen, one on each side of the uterus.
- Their primary function is to produce eggs (ova).
- Typically, only one egg is produced by one ovary alternatively every month.
- Oviducts (Fallopian Tubes):
- These are a pair of narrow, muscular, long ducts extending from each ovary to the upper part of the uterus.
- The mouth of the oviduct is expanded into a funnel-shaped structure to receive the released egg from the ovary.
- Uterus:
- It is a hollow, inverted pear-shaped muscular organ situated in the pelvic cavity between the urinary bladder and the rectum.
- It serves as the site where the embryo grows and develops.
- Vagina:
- A long, muscular tube that opens to the outside, located between the rectum and the urethra.
- It receives the male's penis during copulation and functions as the birth canal.
- Vulva:
- The region where the urethral opening is located above the vaginal opening.
Anatomy of the Human Male Reproductive System
- Testes and Scrotum:
- Sperms are produced in the testes.
- A pair of testes is housed outside the abdominal cavity in a sac called the scrotum.
- This arrangement keeps the testes at a temperature 2−3∘C lower than the internal body temperature, which is the most suitable environment for sperm production and development.
- Duct System:
- Testes contain mass sperm-producing tubes that join to form ducts leading to the epididymis, a highly coiled structure on the upper side of the testes.
- The epididymis leads into a muscular sperm duct.
- Two sperm ducts (one from each testis) open into the urethra just below the urinary bladder.
- Accessory Glands:
- Seminal Vesicles: A pair of lobulated glands that open into the sperm ducts. They produce a secretion that serves as a medium for transporting sperms.
- Prostate Gland: Located at the base of the urinary bladder, encircling the urethra. it pours an alkaline secretion into the semen.
- Cowper's Glands: Two small ovoid glands below the prostate that produce a lubricant.
- Penis and Urethra:
- The urethra passes through the penis and carries both urine and semen out of the body.
Composition and Function of Semen
- Semen is a milky white fluid consisting of a mixture of sperms and secretions from the seminal vesicles, prostate, and Cowper′s glands.
- A single ejaculation typically averages 2−3mL in volume.
- It contains between 20,000,000 and 40,000,000 sperms.
Physiological Processes: Fertilization, Implantation, and Birth
- Fertilization:
- During sexual intercourse, sperms are released into the vagina and swim upward using their tails.
- Only a few of the millions of sperms reach the upper parts of the oviducts; the rest die and are absorbed.
- If an egg is present in the oviduct, it is fertilized by a single sperm.
- During fusion, the tail of the sperm is left behind, and only the head (containing the nucleus) penetrates the egg.
- Fertilization is the act of the sperm nucleus fusing with the egg nucleus.
- Implantation and Pregnancy:
- The zygote begins dividing immediately. By the time it reaches the uterus, it is a small ball of numerous cells.
- The embryo forms a pit in the uterine wall and fixes itself there, a process called implantation.
- Implantation marks the beginning of the state of pregnancy.
- Growth and Differentiation:
- Growth is an irreversible increase in the size and weight of the individual.
- The zygote divides into a cluster of cells, leading to cell specialization or differentiation.
- Differentiation creates distinct body parts, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
- Developmental Timeline:
- 5 weeks: The heart and circulatory system are formed.
- 2 months: Limbs are formed.
- The developed embryo is referred to as a foetus.

- Gestation: The full term of embryo development in the uterus, which in humans lasts approximately 280 days.
