Cell Size

pg. 24 (Topic 2)

Cellular metabolism depends on cell size.

  • Cellular waste must leave.

  • Dissipate thermal energy.

  • Nutrients must enter.

When a cell gets too big it’s unable to do these processes (regulate the membrane).

The size of the cell dictates its function.

  • High surface to volume ratio maximizes transport. (effectiveness)

Cells tend to be because a smaller size allows for more efficient transport of nutrients and waste products, facilitating metabolic processes essential for life.
