The War:

• Cause of the war: Tane cut down the great tree Niwha, which was a powerful tree that connected the earth to the sky. This enraged Tangaroa, who was dependent on the tree for his connection to the world above.

• Tangaroa's wrath: Tangaroa unleashed a massive storm to attack Tane and his people. He summoned giant squid, sharks, and other sea creatures to fight against Tane's warriors.

• Tane's response: Tane gathered his people and rallied them to fight back against Tangaroa's army. He used his knowledge of the forest to create powerful traps and summon birds to aid him in battle.

• The battle: The two armies clashed, with Tangaroa's sea creatures fighting against Tane's land-dwelling warriors. The battle raged on for many days, with neither side gaining the upper hand.

• The turning point: Tane's cleverness and cunning ultimately led to his victory. He tricked Tangaroa into coming onto land, where he was defeated.

Aftermath:

• Tangaroa's defeat: Tangaroa was forced to retreat back into the sea, but not before Tane and his people had claimed victory.

• Establishing boundaries: Tane and Tangaroa agreed to establish a boundary between their domains, with Tangaroa ruling over the sea and Tane ruling over the land.
