(LM11) Quantum Mechanics and the Hydrogen Atom

b

forgot vocab:

n is the energy levels (the circles of an atom)

REMINDER: LOWER ENERGY = LONGER WAVELENGTH & HIGHER ENERGY = SHORTER WAVELENGTH

  • so if n = 5, high energy short wavelength

  • if n = 1, low energy long wavelength

  • To figure out the highest release of energy

    • Use Rydberg equation for change in energy of the electron (∆𝐸 = ℛ ( 1/𝑛^2 − 1/𝑛^2). 1st n is final and 2nd n is initial. focus on the 1/𝑛^2 − 1/𝑛^2 part cuz the highest # is the greatest release in energy

      • this is if a multiple choice question be asking like n = 7 to n = 2 as A and n = 3 to n = 1 as B (answer is A btw)

  • if a photon matches the energy level or higher, then photon is absorbed
