Salvation and Atonement

Salvation - being saved; the belief that through God’s grace, Jesus’ death and resurrection brought about salvation for humanity. This also then enables eternal life in Heaven.

‘Christ died for our sins’ St Paul

The three means to be saved:

  1. Law

    • Salvation is gained by following God’s laws and performing good works

    ‘Keep his commands’ Deuteronomy

10 commandments e.g. Do not kill

  2. Grace

    • Salvation is a gift from God — it is gained through Jesus’ crucifixion on the cross

‘Christ died for our sins’ St Paul

‘It is grace you have been saved… the gift from God’ St Paul

  3. Spirit

    • Salvation is gained with the help of the Holy Spirit, who guides and helps people

‘The Advocate will teach you and remind you of everything I have said’ Jesus

Jesus Christ’s role in salvation

‘Christ died for our sins’ St Paul

  • Jesus died on the cross to save humans from sin

  • His death is the act of Atonement

  • He pays the price for sin and restores the relationship between God and humanity

‘The lamb of God who takes the sins of the world’ John the Baptist

  • Jesus died on the cross to save humans from sin

  • His life is sacrificed to pay the price for human sinfulness

  • This means that human sin can now be forgiven

‘He is the atoning sacrifice… for the sins of the whole world’

  • Jesus died on the cross to save humans from sin

  • His life is sacrificed to pay the price for human sinfulness

  • This shows omnibenevolence - salvation is a gift from God

‘There is no other name under Heaven by which we must be saved’ Acts

  • Only Jesus can achieve salvation for us

  • Cannot be salvation without Christ

Influence

  • To follow God’s laws in order to achieve salvation

  • To have faith in Jesus because he died on the cross to save us

  • To evangelise and tell people Jesus is the source of salvation
