The Other Side of Outsourcing

  • Many Indians speak fluet english right now, compared to over 200 years ago, when English was primarily spoken by the British colonialists, leading to a significant evolution in communication and business practices in India.

  • People take service and sales calls for many transnational corporations around the world

    • They make a lot more many than if they were on many other jobs. They get disposable money

  • Competition of workers is fierce. Ambassadors go to school to recrute people. Many people submit applications every day, but only 6% get hired.

  • At school, kids learn the American dialect to prepare for the call centre

    • Westernization of these kids

  • Kids in the call centre get $200 a month, $1000 a month in American standards, without MBA’s. Superviser got $100 a month, after graduation with a MBA. The standard of living in India is 1/5 of the standard of living in America, so $200 a month is good for them

  • These kids carry Americanization more that it was back in the day

  • All of the young adults have American names (ex. along with india food, girls eat pizza hut.)

  • Back in the day,at 21, girls were probably getting married, not getting jobs

  • People have become more materialistic, and now go brand shopping

  • Role model has changed in girls (sisters see Bill Gates as role model, mother sees her god as a role model.)Girls say that parents are not as much as a role model anymore (ex. a girl says her parents want her to get married now, but she says no)

  • Scholar worries that family bond that holds indian culture together may be eroding (ex. believes that if someone becomes rich or wealthy enough, people will take their parents to a old peoples home.)

  • Valentines day is a new thing in India, and a man of a group doesn’t like it, as people should love each other all year
