aims of punishment

describe catholics beliefs about the aim of punishment

  • aim of punishment = help people by understanding why they commit crimes and helping them to change → better ppl

  • help the offender see what they have done wrong and change their behaviour and avoid repeats. also make up for their wrongdoings → ‘eye for an eye’ Levitcus → offender get what they deserve

  • jesus → ‘love our enemies’ and therefore catholics do not support retribution but do support justice for victims and punishment for criminals. However the catechism does state that the punishment must reflect the gravity of the crime.
