🧠 1. Recognizing Structures FAST (CCA vs IJV vs Thyroid vs SCM)
Think of this like a pattern, not memorization:
🔵 CCA (Common Carotid Artery)
Round
Thick walls
Does NOT compress
Usually smaller than IJV
👉 Think: “perfect circle = artery”
🟣 IJV (Internal Jugular Vein)
Bigger than CCA
Oval/irregular shape
Compressible
👉 Think: “big + squishy = vein”
🟡 Thyroid
More solid/gray (homogeneous)
Located medial to CCA
👉 Think: “gray tissue next to artery”
🟢 SCM (Sternocleidomastoid)
Superficial (top of image)
Muscle → slightly striated look
👉 Think: “on top = muscle”
⚡ Quick Mental Map (Transverse View)
From top → bottom / lateral → medial:
SCM (top)
IJV (big + lateral)
CCA (round + medial)
Thyroid (most medial)
⚡ 2. Hypoechoic vs Hyperechoic (BIG test trap)
🔘 Hypoechoic
Darker
Fewer echoes
👉 Think: “HYPO = low brightness”
⚪ Hyperechoic
Brighter
More echoes
👉 Think: “HYPER = high brightness”
💡 Easy memory trick:
Hypo = shadowy
Hyper = glowing
🎛 3. TGC vs LGC (VERY testable)
📊 TGC (Time Gain Compensation)
Adjusts brightness TOP → BOTTOM (depth)
👉 Think: “T = top to bottom”
↔ LGC (Lateral Gain Compensation)
Adjusts brightness LEFT → RIGHT
👉 Think: “L = lateral (side to side)”
⚡ Quick difference:
TGC = depth
LGC = side-to-side
📏 4. Longitudinal vs Transverse Measurements
📍 Longitudinal (long view)
Measure one thing
Anterior → posterior
👉 Think: “long = one line”
🔵 Transverse (cross-section)
Measure two directions
Anterior → posterior
Side → side
👉 Think: “circle = 2 measurements”
🚀 Ultra-fast recap (what to remember during test)
Round + not compressible = CCA
Big + squishy = IJV
Top = SCM
Medial gray = thyroid
Hypo = dark
Hyper = bright
TGC = up/down
LGC = left/right
Long = 1 measurement
Transverse = 2 measurements
