  • Psychophysics

  • Absolute Threshold

    • Definition: The minimum stimulus energy necessary for an observer to detect a stimulus.

  • Difference Threshold (Just Noticeable Difference - JND)

    • Definition: The minimal detectable difference between two stimuli.

Signal Detection Theory Components

  • Bias

  • Weber’s Law

    • Definition: The ratio of the difference threshold (ΔI) to the stimulus intensity (I) is constant.

    • Concept: Doubling the stimulus intensity results in doubling the difference threshold (Weber's fraction).

  • Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve

    • Definition: A graphical representation of the hit rate against the false alarm rate in signal detection experiments.

    • Indication: If hit and false alarm rates are equal, signal detection is not distinguishable from noise. As sensitivity increases, the curve approaches the upper left corner—indicating higher sensitivity.
