Genre - a term used to define elements that repeat themselves similar kinds of works
Genre can be called a typified rhetorical action, which means there are features that repeat over time with differences
Genres that exist in one culture sometimes dont exist in another cultures
Main types of literature genres
fiction, poetry, nonfiction
Genre is not a medium
Medium is a form something is delivered in
a medium of a move is the film
the kind of technology used to deliver something to us
Sublime - awe inspiring can be horrifying, shows insignificance of humanity to something greater then itself.
Darkness as intrinsic to humanity - no good character in the story
Marriage as resolution - not always a happy ending, can be that character gets married then monster kills bride or husband.
Dracula’s Guest
Has sense of mystery and dread when the german horse driver cannot speak english and protests against going down a road that the main charecter wants to go down. The horses also stop alot and sniff the air. There is also mystery and dread when the main charecter walks into a shelter after the severe snowing stops and finds a coffin that says COUNTESS DOLINGEN OF GRATZ IN STYRIA SOUGHT AND FOUND DEATH 1801 and on top of the tomb that says the dead travel fast.
Weather is another convention of genre used because the clouds turn dark then go sunny again after the charecters hear a wolf even though wolves shouldn’t be in snow weather. Weather is also used when the main charecter walks down the road the german horse person says not to go down after a tall skinny man scares away his horses and the german man dissapears. The weather starts storming during this time. It starts violently snowing and the main charecter struglles to walk or run because of the thickness of the snow and the brutality of the winds. The main charecter gets hit with a tornado and blasting winds after looking at the writing on the tomb.
Supernatural is another convention found in the story because the german horse driver tells a story that in the town the main charecter is going to people who were already dead came back to life with their mouths filled with blood and all the living people at the town ran away. He couldnt say what happened to the dead people but kept looking at his watch, showing more mystery.
The pursued protagonist - During the part that the main charecter goes down the road he was told not to go down, he gets hit by hail, snow, and blasting winds. He also gets thrown around by dead people from the tomb he tried to seek shelter in. After this, a wolf is on top of his body ready to eat him after he passed out.
Reason
Technology and invention - robots in this story have brains and eyes and one robot who can question its own existence. The robots are built out of metal and absorb electrical energy directly and can stand extreme temperatures. Magnifying things that allow people on the base that transmits solar energy to earth to view the earth and the stars.
Other planets and dimensions - Donovan and Powell live on earth that solar energy from their base are directed to.
Speculative technology & superintelligent computers and technology - the robots and the executive robot cutie that work for the humans to send solar energy to earth and other planets are able to think for themself and attempt to understand their own existence and choose not to follow the orders of the humans who created them.
