📘 ACT 4 – FULL STUDY SHEET (Scene 1 only)
(Act 4 has only one scene, but it is the longest and most important in the entire play.)
⚖ Act 4, Scene 1 — The Trial Scene
1. Setting + Stakes
Takes place in the Duke’s court in Venice.
Antonio is on trial because he cannot repay Shylock’s loan.
Shylock demands the pound of flesh, refusing all money.
2. Shylock’s Position
Insists on the bond because he hates Antonio.
Rejects double and even triple the money.
Argues that the law must be followed exactly or Venice’s justice system collapses.
Compares Antonio to a slave-owner: Christians keep slaves because “they are ours,” so he wants his “pound of flesh” because it is his.
3. Duke’s Role
Tries to persuade Shylock to show mercy, but cannot legally stop him.
Hopes the visiting lawyer (Bellario) will save Antonio.
4. Portia’s Entrance (Disguised as “Balthazar”)
Portia arrives disguised as a young male lawyer.
Gives the famous “quality of mercy” speech, arguing that mercy is divine and freely given.
Shylock refuses.
5. Portia’s Legal Trap
Portia first agrees Shylock has the right to the flesh.
Then she reveals the loophole:
The bond allows flesh, but no blood.
If Shylock spills one drop of Christian blood, he breaks Venetian law.
Shylock realizes he cannot take the flesh without blood → he loses.
6. Shylock’s Punishment
Portia accuses him of attempted murder of a Venetian citizen.
Venetian law:
Half his wealth goes to Antonio,
Half goes to the state,
His life is at the Duke’s mercy.
Duke spares his life.
Antonio reduces his share on two conditions:
Shylock must convert to Christianity.
Shylock must leave his wealth to Jessica and Lorenzo when he dies.
7. The Ring Plot Begins
Bassanio thanks “Balthazar” (Portia) and offers money.
Portia refuses money but asks for Bassanio’s ring.
Bassanio refuses at first (Portia made him swear never to remove it).
Antonio pressures him → Bassanio gives the ring away.
Nerissa (as the clerk) plans to get Gratiano’s ring too.
📘 ACT 5 – FULL STUDY SHEET (Scene 1)
(Act 5 also has only one scene.)
