Analyze- to examine, in detail, the structure/makeup of something with the purpose of explaining or interpreting how its parts work together

Context clues- A relationship between actions or events such that one or more are the result of the others

Evaluate- making a judgment from an analysis of the information presented

Excerpt- a passage or quotation taken or selected from a book, document, film

Elaborate- to explain in greater detail

Theme- the main message the author wants readers to understand

Text structure- the way authors organize information in text

Hypothesize- a testable prediction about the relationship between two or more variables-make an educated guess

Paraphrase- to state something written or spoken in different words, especially in a shorter and simpler form to make the meaning clearer

Infer/draw inferences- a conclusion you reach by applying logic to the evidence you are given

Plot- sequence of events in a story

Stanza- a division of a poem consisting of two or more lines arranged together as a unit

Prompt- 1-3 sentences raising an issue, or asking a question that you will have to respond to in an essay

Articulate- able to express ideas clearly and effectively in speech or writing

Schema- a reader's background knowledge

Summarize- to give a short and modestly detailed description of what is written about within the main article, or what has been said in a source

Claim- persuades, argues, convinces, proves, or provocatively suggests something to a reader who may or may not initially agree with you

Clarify- to make understandable

Demonstrate- to show or prove something using an example

Synthesize- to combine separate elements to form a whole
