Present and Past Simple Passive

Understanding the Passive Voice

  • The passive voice is used to emphasize the action or the object of a sentence rather than the subject who performs the action.

  • Use Cases for Passive Voice:
      - When the action is more important than the doer.
      - When the doer is unknown or irrelevant.

Examples of Passive Voice

  • Present Simple Passive:
      - Example 1: "The museum is visited by four million people each year."

Forming the Passive Voice

  • The passive voice is formed using the verb "to be" and the past participle of the main verb.
      - Present Simple Passive Formation:
        - Structure: Subject + is/are + past participle
        - Example: "The tickets for the performance aren’t sold online."

  - Past Simple Passive Formation:
    - Structure: Subject + was/were + past participle
    - Example: "He wasn’t found guilty."

Important Notes

  • When asking questions in the passive voice, the word "by" is often placed at the end of the question.
