In-Depth Notes on Human Brain Cross-Sections

Overview of Human Brain Cross-Sections

  • Examination of actual human brains in transverse sections to understand comparative anatomy

Section 1: Superior View

  • Anterior (A) and Posterior (P) orientation explained:
    • When viewed from above, anterior refers to the front (forehead region) and posterior to the back (toward the occipital region).
    • Right (R) and Left (L) orientation based on position of cadaver lying supine.
  • Key Structures:
    • Cerebrum: Largest and most prominent part of the brain; characterized by its wrinkled appearance.
    • Corpus Callosum: Arch-shaped white matter connecting both hemispheres; appears in two places due to the cross-section slicing through it.
    • Lateral Ventricles: Appears as four shapes in the section, but there are actually only two lateral ventricles shaped like arches.
    • Thalamus: Located deep in the brain, made up of gray matter.

Section 2: Superior Orbit Level

  • Slice situated through the eye sockets.
  • Key Structures:
    • Cerebrum: Visible again.
    • Lateral Ventricles: Represented again; base can be observed.
    • Third Ventricle: Narrow cavity is visible in the center.
    • Corpus Callosum: Still visible; connects both hemispheres.
    • Thalamus: Continues to remain visible in this section.

Section 3: Midbrain Level

  • This section cuts through the base of the orbits, approaching the nasal cavity.
  • Key Structures:
    • Midbrain: Identification of the midbrain, the uppermost part of the brainstem, at this level.
    • Cerebral Aqueduct: A very narrow channel allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flow from the third ventricle down to the fourth.
    • Cerebellum: Slightly visible, indicating beginning transition down the brain.
    • Dura Mater: Membrane separating the cerebrum and cerebellum.

Section 4: Pons and Cerebellum

  • Slice is through the base of the nasal cavity.
  • Key Structures:
    • Pons: Found below the midbrain; connects various parts of the brain.
    • Fourth Ventricle: Cavity between pons and cerebellum; also visible here.
    • Cerebellum: Clearly observed alongside the pons, showing their relationship as entry/exit points.

Section 5: Oral Cavity Level

  • The slice is now at the upper part of the oral cavity (maxillary sinuses).
  • Key Structures:
    • Medulla Oblongata: Last portion of the brainstem visible here.
    • Cerebellum: Maximum width visible in this section.
    • Fourth Ventricle: Visible but narrow at this level.

Section 6: Base of Skull

  • Slice taken at the level of the oral cavity, with structures starting to exit from the brain.
  • Key Structures:
    • Spinal Cord: Visible beneath the brain at this point.
    • Cerebellum: Small bits still seen from the underside.
    • Occipital Bone: Also visible as the section cuts through the base of the skull underneath.
    • Tongue: Presented within the oral cavity, indicating deep slicing toward the full oral structure.
