believed that matter was made up of air.
Thales of Miletus (6th BCE)
believed that matter was made up of water.
Heraclitus (540 - 480 BCE)
believed that matter was made up of fire.
Empedocles (490 - 430 BCE)
believed that matter was made up of earth, air, water, and fire.
Leucippus and Democritus
believed that there must be a smallest unit of matter that cannot be broken down. They called this “atomos”
